Lee Domanico
Chief Executive Officer
Marin Healthcare District and Marin General Hospital
Veteran healthcare executive Lee Domanico has successfully reorganized and managed major hospital-based healthcare systems nationwide. Domanico is widely regarded for his ability to establish “patient-centric” environments and for leveraging innovative technology to increase profitability.
Since 2008, Domanico has served as CEO of the Marin Healthcare District where he led the acquisition and initial operations of Marin General Hospital. He obtained 35M unsecured debt to finance operating company infrastructures, followed by 80 million in working capital to support initial operations. In the past year he has led the hospital to profitability, assumed management of two additional hospitals, established a multi-specialty medical foundation, and implemented multiple physician joint ventures.
Prior to this role, he was CEO of Legacy Health System (LHS) in Portland, Oregon, one of the largest healthcare systems in the Northwest with five hospitals, 2,700 physicians and 8,500 employees. At LHS, Domanico was recruited to restore operational stability and profitability and, in less than two years, installed a recovery plan, completely restructured the management team, reversed a $9M annual loss to an annual profit gain of $28M and grew LHS’s market share from 27% to 30+%.
Before joining Legacy, Domanico was CEO of El Camino Hospital where he created a strategic plan that paired technology-rich management systems with innovative patient-centric programs to improve and enrich the patient experience. As a result, he erased a substantial financial loss and posted the largest profit ever in 2002 and continued to increase profits to record levels in each successive year. During his tenure as CEO, El Camino also received numerous awards for quality, service and innovation including AHA's Quest for Quality Finalist Award and the prestigious Nursing Magnet Award
Prior to El Camino, Domanico was Senior Vice President for Tenet Healthcare in Los Angeles where he was credited with the turnaround of USCHospital and with planning and executing the largest healthcare bankruptcy turnaround in history (Tenet's Pennsylvania Region) and was voted Philadelphia Business Leader of the Year in 1999. Prior to the Philadelphia "rescue", Domanico was successful as Tenet's Southern California Vice President of Operations and as CEO of University Hospital at USC, where he earned the Tenet CEO Circle of Excellence award.
While serving on the Illinois Hospital Association's Board of Directors, Domanico successfully accomplished landmark healthcare initiatives for serving underserved and underinsured populations. Additionally, he was a key member of the Governor's Task Force on Health Care Reform during his tenure as CEO of Columbus-Cabrini Health System in Chicago. Domanico's earlier executive management roles were as COO of Alexian Brothers Hospital in the Chicago area and CEO of Delta Memorial Hospital in Antioch, California.
Domanico holds a BS degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MS degree in Industrial Engineering from StanfordUniversity where he received a full academic scholarship. He is a published authority on hospital-based healthcare management and is well respected for his innovative and collaborative approach to opportunity capture.
Lee Domanico and his wife, Mariko Blouin, live in Mill Valley, California.
